You display a black velvet bag which contains two white balls and one red ball. You invite three spectators to reach into the bag and select a ball without looking at the colour. You proceed to say you will find the odd colour ball by placing a £1 coin on the back of the spectators hand who is holding it, stating that if you guess wrong they keep the £1.
The hands are now opened to reveal that your prediction was right, the hand on which you placed the £1 coin contains the red ball. Now you up the stakes with a £2 coin. The balls are now replaced into the bag and mixed up. The spectators now choose another ball without looking at the colours. You now place the £2 coin on the back of a spectator’s hand you say will contain the odd ball the ball in that hand is shown to be white. Have you lost ? No, the other spectators open their hands and instead of two white balls and one red ball there are two red balls and one white ball and you keep your £2.
